Catching up with the weapons caches
Herschel Smith at Captain's Journal walks back the cat on all the weapons we are finding and trying to account for in Iraq. He starts with:
USA Today reports on confiscated weapons piling up in Iraq.
Coalition forces have uncovered more insurgent weapons caches in the first six months of this year than the entire previous year, Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said Monday.
The record number of seizures is due largely to a new U.S. strategy that has moved American forces off bases and into neighborhoods, generating more tips from civilians. Offensives have also disrupted insurgent sanctuaries, Petraeus said....
...He goes on to describe the failure to secure these weapons at the time of the invasion. It was very much the result of the catastrophic success of the initial invasion where the Iraqi army did one of the most massive farewell to arms operations in history. By literally walking away from the war and their post no one was in charge of the weapons depots and the US did not put adequate forces in place to deal with them. It is a long piece but worth it. Hat tip Larwyn.
