India finds al Qaeda connection to doc plot bomber
Times of India:
The Christian Science Monitor has an interesting article on the al Qaeda connection that has only recently infested India. One of the interesting aspects of the case is that Khafeel caught the jihad disease while he was studying in the UK. "When he returned to India, according to reports by investigators, Khafeel had let his goatee grow into a full beard. On Feb. 19, 2006, he organized a meeting in Bangalore for World Chechnya Day – highlighting the plight of Muslims in the Russian state." It appears to have grown from there.
Inflammatory speeches by Osama bin Laden and anti-UK, anti-US propaganda material in three CDs found in an almirah at Kafeel Ahmed's house have helped investigators get closer to the link between the UK terror plot and Al-Qaida.I think more will be found as this investigation goes further. India may be a clear player in this battle by al Qaeda to use Indians as "clean skin" terrorist.
The material found points to Kafeel and brother Sabeel's Al-Qaida connection. The investigators are closely looking at the CDs and the contents of the hard disk.
Kafeel and his associates are believed to have visited Pakistan more than once to seek approval for the UK terror plot. Added to this, one of the main suspects, Bilal Abdulla, is suspected to have indoctrinated Kafeel and Sabeel.
Abdulla went to UK in 2003. He met Kafeel at Cambridge. Kafeel's case has proved right intelligence alerts that the Al-Qaida is recruiting heavily in India. According to State Anti-Terrorist Cell (ATC) officials, about a fortnight ago, the J&K authorities had arrested a person and seized CDs containing Laden's messages.
The suspect was circulating the CDs, aimed at motivating people to take up jehad. An ATC official said: "Al-Qaida operatives have infiltrated into the country in a big way and are acting as sleeper cells, spreading messages brainwashing youths. They have a long-term, methodical plan. It will not be long before these sympathisers turn operatives."
The officials believe the Al-Qaida is recruiting young educated people who can be sent to the US and Europe to create terror. "The US and Europe are closely monitoring Pakistan, Bangladesh and Arab countries. We believe Al-Qaida is trying to use Indian resources and infrastructure to create havoc in the US and Europe," said a senior officer working on counterterrorist strategies.
