Brits refuse to confirm that Cheshire arrests were of drivers of car bombs

Briefing reporters after the latest meeting of the government's COBRA crisis cell, (Home Secretary Jacqui) Smith said she will make a statement on the terrorism alert situation to the House of Commons on Monday.

Sky News earlier reported that two people arrested overnight on a motorway in northwest England were the drivers of the Mercedes cars abandoned in central London early Friday. The television channel did not identify its sources.

"I'm not confirming operational details," said Smith, adding that it was up to police to release details of their activities as they see fit.

My speculation is that they are attempting to get more information on others associated with the plot and do not want to tip them that they may be under suspicion. The media is making that more difficult, but the refusal to comment keeps the ambiguity out there which gives the authorities a better chance of grabbing them before they disappear.
