Australia arrest Doc in connection to UK terror plot

News.com.au:

A SECOND doctor is being questioned after the arrest overnight at Brisbane's international airport of a registrar at the Gold Coast Hospital in Southport over suspected links to the bomb plots in London and Scotland.

A 27-year-old man, who was not an Australian citizen, was arrested at Brisbane airport yesterday as he tried to leave the country. He did not have a return ticket.

A second doctor is being questioned by police in relation to the case, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has revealed today.

Mr Beattie said authorities were not aware of any specific link but investigations were continuing.

He said Queensland police were also carrying out surveillance and other precautionary measures.

Last night's arrest was made at 11pm (AEST) by a counter-terrorism team comprising Queensland police and Australian Federal Police officers after advice from UK authorities.

He was now helping police with inquiries. Mr Ruddock said no charges had been laid.

The man is the eighth person detained over the bombings.

A number of search warrants had been executed across southeast Queensland, including at the Gold Coast Hospital and police were pursuing a number of leads.

It is believed the suspect had been about to board a flight to Kuala Lumpur on a one-way ticket, with a view to getting a connecting flight to India.

There were no details of the doctor's connection to the plot if any, but it can be speculated that his name and number may have been in the phone book of a cell phone used by those already under suspicion. The police in other stories have indicated that the phones revealed a treasure trove of information. Having a one way ticket to a far off destination probably added to the suspicions about the man. The second doctor being questioned may have also had his name and number in one of the cell phones.

Tim Blair is running updates on the Aussie Docs. Wretchard also has some info in his comments to this post. The Sydney Morning Herald has a story on the arrest and a picture of the Gold Coast Hospital where he apparently worked.
