NIE excites lefty loser lobby

The latest NIE had about the right gloom and doom for the phony anti war left to salivate at the predictions of defeat.

However, it reminds me of the intelligence estimate for Anbar first leaked last August and then recycled in the fall. It was obviously written before the Anbar Sheiks decided to join our side and get their followers to also volunteer for police work. In other words, it was out of date by the time it was made public.

I think the same thing may be happening with the NIE. It had to be in the works for some time and certainly before the effects of the surge had already started. Since the surge was announced al Qaeda has ordered a retreat from Baghdad and Sadr has told the Mahdi Army to put away its weapons and lie low. In the meantime the Iraqi government has aggressively gone after the enemy in Baghdad.

All this leads me to believe that the people who want to lose in Iraq are going to be disappointed again.

Update: Westhawk examines the NIE and believes the intelligence community has put us on a course to slow the tempo of final resolution in Iraq. This seems consistent with the complaints of many of the Shia that the US is not letting the majority win. I think it is very much like our position in the Arab Israeli dispute where we want let the Israeli win. In both cases we are saving Sunni populations that don't like us. I guess we are doing that to work with Sunnis who do like us.
