A convenient change of heart for Houston jihadi?

A defense attorney for a U.S. citizen arrested in Kenya on charges he received training at an al-Qaeda camp as part of an effort to overthrow the Somali government said Tuesday his client had renounced his violent beliefs before he was taken into custody. There is some indication that Maldonado was unhappy with his colleagues after he and his wife contracted malaria which she later died from. I would be surprised if he gets out on bail.
But prosecutors and FBI agents said during a court hearing that Daniel Joseph Maldonado was a dangerous person who didn't think the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were an evil act and who wouldn't have a problem killing Americans if he had to do so.
Authorities asked Tuesday that Maldonado be held without bond until his trial. U.S. Magistrate Judge Calvin Botley delayed his decision until Wednesday so Maldonado's attorneys could review reports written by FBI agents who questioned Maldonado after he was captured by the Kenyan military Jan. 21.

"Why do you train on weapons and explosives? You train on them to kill people," said federal prosecutor Gary Cobe.
FBI agent John McKinley testified Maldonado received training in Somalia on how to use an AK-47 assault rifle, spent time with a bombmaker and helped interrogate a flight attendant who was suspected of being a spy and later killed.
McKinley said many of the people who were at these training camps were al-Qaeda members, including one man who is a suspect in the 1998 al-Qaeda bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
