Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) suffers stroke

Reuters:

U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson, Democrat of South Dakota, had an apparent stroke on Wednesday at his office in Washington and has been hospitalized, NBC News reported.

The condition of the 59-year-old Johnson was unknown, the network said.

...
If Johnson were not able to serve the Republican governor of South Dakota could appoint a new Senator that would switch the balance to the Republicans with the vote of Dick Cheney.

Hopefully Johnson will recover, but I do recall the ghoulish death watch the Democrats had for Strom Thurman and others just a few years ago.

More details on Johnson's possible stroke here and here. It appears from this account that the stroke was pretty mild. He will probably be prescribed some blood thinners, to prevent future strokes. Depending on the severity, it could impair his mobility and speech.
