Bolton calls for Iran President to be charged with inciting genocide
Guardian:
Ahmadinejad also staged a "freedom of speech" stunt at an Iranian university around the time the conference was getting underway where students protested his appearance. I think this was a set up for his argument that European countries do not allow people to question the existence of the holocaust. These laws were probably intended to stop the growth in the revival of fascist parties and regimes such as the one in Iran. Regardless of their intention, holocaust denial is ultimately at best a case of willful ignorance of a historic event.
Iran wants to deny it because it believes that Israel's legitimacy springs from the holocaust. I disagree with that suggestion. Israel has historic roots to the area that go back thousands of years. Those who remain willfully ignorant of the history of the holocaust also attempt to remain willfully ignorant of the historic ties of the Jews to the land of Israel. Any inconvenient history is denied. The facts are pretty clear. The Jews were conquered by the Romans and others and in the mid 600's the area was conquered by Muslims.
For a time the area was conquered by Christians from Europe during the Crusades. Unfortunately, the Muslims retook the area and have been trying to keep it in the dark ages ever since. They are fighting to return it to the dark ages at this time and denying history is one of the ways they are attempting to do it.
The outgoing US ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, is backing a call for the president of Iran to be charged with inciting genocide because of his speeches advocating the destruction of the state of Israel.I think Ahmadinejad has been trying to be clever in the way he attacks the existence of Israel of late. He initially talked about wiping it off the face of the map, but after he was rebuked he switched to this mystical "disappearance" theme. This suggest some awareness of the 1948 genocide convention and its implications for his regime.
Barely a week after he announced his resignation from the UN post, Mr Bolton will appear tomorrow among a panel of diplomats and lawyers calling for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to be prosecuted. The panel has been convened by a Jewish umbrella group in the US, the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organisations.

The call for legal action came as Mr Ahmadinejad repeated his onslaught against Israel at an international gathering of holocaust deniers in Tehran. The president, who has dismissed the murder of six million Jews by the Nazis as a myth told up to 70 visiting speakers that the Israeli state would soon be wiped out.
"Thanks to people's wishes and God's will, the trend for the existence of the Zionist regime is downwards and this is what God has promised and what all nations want," he said.

Mr Bolton will be joined in tomorrow's launch of the legal action against Mr Ahmadinejad by a Harvard law professor, Alan Dershowitz, and the former Israeli ambassador to the UN, Dore Gold, together with experts from the US, Canada and Israel. A suit will be lodged with the international court of justice at The Hague, which will decide whether to hear the action. The panel said the Iranian president was guilty of inciting genocide "by making numerous threats against the United States, calling for the destruction of Israel and instigating discrimination against Christians and Jews". His words violate a 1948 UN genocide convention, to which Iran is a signatory, they said.
