Murtha is win-win for GOP
Nancy Pelosi's backing of John Murtha has proved an embarrassment for Democrats and Republicans stand to gain whether Murtha wins or Steny Hoyer prevails in the Democrat Majority Leader race that comes to a vote today. Murtha has been wrong on the war for some time and that is one of the reasons why Pelosi backed him, but he also has ethics baggage that makes him a handsome target for Republicans who want to show Pelosi's hypocrisy on the culture of corruption issue.
Murtha is such a gift to the GOP that Rush Limbaugh actually endorsed him on his radio show on Wednesday. However, if Hoyer wins it is a demonstration of weakness and a lack of clout on the part of Pelosi, which also benefits the Republicans. The Washington Post says the race has bitterly divided the House Democrats. Bob Novak calls it Pelosi's first mistake. I would argue that her first mistake was being a liberal Democrat. Other mistakes flow from that one.
Jules Crittenden agrees.
