Conway gets nod as Commandant of Marine Corps

NY Times:

Lt. Gen. James T. Conway, a veteran of two tours in Iraq, has been nominated by President Bush to serve as commandant of the Marine Corps as the service is struggling under investigations into the circumstances of civilian deaths in Iraq.

Pentagon and Marine Corps officials said the timing of the announcement on Tuesday was unrelated to investigations that marines might have killed 24 civilians without provocation in Haditha, in restive Anbar Province in November.

If confirmed by the Senate, General Conway would put on a fourth star and the Marine Corps would put atop its command structure an energetic, combat-tested officer — known for speaking his mind, even in public.

The current commandant, Gen. Michael W. Hagee, is scheduled to retire in January after a standard four-year assignment. Handicapping on his successor was already under way within the Pentagon before news of official inquiries into the Haditha deaths burst into public view over recent weeks.

"There is absolutely no relationship between this nomination and anything associated with ongoing investigations," said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman.

Gen. Conway was in charge of the Marines in the assualt on Baghdad. He is a good choice. There is a good bit of material on him in Trainor and Gordon's Cobra II about the major combat operations phase of the war.
