Brits have first contact with Taliban

Telegraph:

British troops have killed five Taliban fighters in what is believed to be their first fatal battle since deploying in the south of Afghanistan.

Men from 3 Bn the Parachute Regiment and the Royal Gurkha Rifles opened fire after they were attacked during a counter-insurgency operation in the north of Helmand province.

The force, accompanying men from the Afghan National Army and police, were conducting a search in the small town of Nauzad, 40 miles north of their base at Camp Bastion.

At least one Apache attack helicopter fired on Taliban hiding in buildings. There were no British casualties during the operation on Sunday morning.

The Taliban cannot stand up to trained troops, particularly those who can call on superior fire support like attack helicopters.
