Self deportation

While arguments go back and forth between enforcment and a guest worker program, those in favor of the latter course suggest that we cannot deport 11 to 12 million people who may are may not be in this country illegally. Whatever the number, we should bring some dynamic scoring to this debate.

The police in NY City reduced the crime rate by focusing on so called "broken window" crimes. What they did was focus of criminal culture that existed in some of the city's neighborhoods. The effect was to drive the overall crime rate down.

One reason why immigration violations are occuring at an excelerating rate, is that the chances are remote that there will be any consequences for violating immigration law. As I have said before, this is a bipartisan problem.

What is not appreciated is how vigorous enforcement of the immigration laws will not only lead to the deportation of those who are caught, but it will lead to self deportation as those who are in the country leave to avoid prosecution.

The helocopter mistaken for one belonging to ICE in Houston, that set off a panic in the illegal alien population is a case in point. More such choppers near the job sites of places that employ these workers, combined with enforcement actions against people who are violating the law at those sites will probably lead to people leaving voluntarily.

If this program were tied to an increased quota for Mexico, for those who are in Mexico, we could get some semblance of control of the migration.

In addition to the enforcment mentioned above, we should also have hospitals and schools notify ICE when people who are in the ocuntry illegally use their facilities. I am not talking about denying them acess. However, if you become aware some one is here illegally you should have an obligation to notify people who are supposed to enforce the law. That is what the rule of law is supposed to be about.

The end result we are looking for is to have people immigrating into this country legally. It is not to exclude someone looking for a job. However, if we do not have control of the process, we are vulnerable to those who would come here to harms us instead of to work.

Now it is more expensive to come here as a legal immigrant than an illegal one. We have to reverse that metric. When we do the market will take care of the problem.

Update: Gateway Pundit has a good post on the backlash against the Mexican flag wavers.
