Yes Freeport has bananas

Houston Chronicle:

The Port of Freeport is handling a surge in banana shipments in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Before the hurricane, Freeport handled about 300 containers of bananas a week, Executive Director Pete Reixach said. Now it's more than 1,000 containers of bananas a week, he added.

To deal with the added fruit coming through, the port had to expand hard surface areas where the containers could be placed.

Port officials said Freeport is handling a significant portion of bananas that Dole and Chiquita were sending through the hurricane-damaged Port of Gulfport.

Both companies already were shipping bananas through that port, as does Turbana, which brings in bananas from Colombia.

Since Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, the Port of Houston also has seen an upswing in shipments of various goods coming across its docks.

So far, the Port of Houston has seen about 64,000 tons of additional goods move through the Turning Basin, along with a modest rise in container traffic at its Barbour's Cut facility, spokeswoman Felicia Griffin said.
