Texas politicians who are making a difference for Katrina victims

Rick Perry called Harris County Judge Bob Eckels at three in the morning to see if the Astrodome could be made available for New Orleans evacuees. By the end of the day, cots were set up, showers were set up and medical teams were on hand to check evacuees as they came off their busses and in some cases before they got off. Arrangements were made for pets through the SPCA. Later the Reliant convention facility next to the dome was made available for more evacuees. Mayor White has indicated that the George R. Brown Convention Center can also be made available if necessary.

Perry has had similar cooperation from cities around the state as far away as Corpus Christi and Lubbock, as well as Austin, San Antonio and Dallas-Fort Worth. Cities and counties large and small are opening their doors to help our neighbors from Louisana. Some in emergency facilities, others in motels through out the State. A man in Brenham gave a local motel $5,000 to be used toward paying the bills of flood victims. A motel in Nagodoches cut his daily rate to $25 a day for flood victims and arranged to find food for them. Resturants have donated cooking for people who bring food by to be given to victims.

There are a lot of heros in this story all over Texas from the Governor on down. While politicians and government workers have been criticized for their response to the emergency created by Katrina, there are many here who should be given props for what they have accomplished so far. I would also add to that list political leaders in Mississippi which received the brunt of the storm. They have shown real grace under pressure. It is really said that Louisiana has not had much of that on display.
