Subsunk comments on Rita activity
...I live on the West Side around Dairy Ashford and Westheimer.Vehicles full of gas--I'm jealous.
Pretty quiet over here. Based on the projection to come ashore just east of
Galveston Island, the weatherdudes are talking about 70-80 mph winds in my
neighborhood. All my neighbors stayed. I tried to get to Centreville this
am, early to get a generator my brother in law was bringing, but the beltway
and SH-6 were packed with less than 1 mile in 20 minutes being the norm.
Everything about the evacuation has been OK, just the services are too
overwhelmed to handle it. I know they are trying hard. The folks in
Houston proper north of I-10 and west of I-45 probably didn't need to
evacuate and should have let the coastal folks get out. The only complaint
I see is they were way too slow to go counterflow on the highways, so too
many folks ran out of gas trying to get out. Mqaybe they will be able to
fix that. Still plenty of time to get out if they bring in the gas to the
stations.
I-45 cleared up around Madisonville at 0600 on Thursday am. I-10 cleared at
Columbus, and 290 cleared at somewhere close to Brenham, according to KILT.
After waiting in the two lines just to get on the highways at 0600 (left the
house at 0520), we turned around (son and I, he has a strong back when I
push him) and went home. 0700 Hurricane forecast said Galveston Bay
landfall, currently at Cat 5, 170 mph sustained winds, expected strength at
Cat 3-4 at landfall. 1000 forecast said east of Galveston Bay Cat 5 at 167
mph and weakening slowly.
Looked again at 1700 and said pretty much same thing. When you look at the
vapor photos you see it dragged in some dry air, and then started to look
like it might be forming up again to strengthen, but none of the forecasters
said so. My untrained eye, what do I know?
...
I got water, food, a generator, several guns and lots of ammo. All my
neighbors have the same, even the really liberal ones. I have 3 vehicles
with full gas tanks, and one extra 5 gal can for the generator. We feel
pretty good about our situation. Had shrimp and spaghetti tonight to help
clean out the freezer. I'm eating pretty good. Steak tomorrow.
