Running two miles through Rita wearing flip flops

Beaumont Enterprise:

A Mauriceville man jogged in flip flops two miles in Hurricane Rita at about 8 p.m. Friday to reach a Red Cross shelter at the middle school - where 14 other evacuees were staying the night.

Charles Dixon, a 41-year-old offshore worker, had planned to stay in his doublewide trailer through the hurricane but changed his mind when wind started knocking down pine trees in his yard.

On Tuesday, he had booked a hotel room in Tyler for his wife and three children, ages 12, 13 and 14.

He wanted to stay in Orange County to keep an eye on the neighborhood and get a thrill.

"It's kind of exciting in a way," he said. "But I kinda chickened out."
