Rehnquist dies from cancer

Houston Chronical:

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, the conservative anchor of the U.S. Supreme Court who presided over its dramatic shift to the right, died Saturday night after a battle with thyroid cancer.

He was 80.

Rehnquist's death creates the first opening for a chief justice in 19 years and gives President Bush a second opening on the nine-member court — and launches a furious partisan battle over its future.
