A question of leadership

It is sometimes hard to remember with all the whining coming from Louisana politicians, that Mississipps took the brunt of Hurricane Katrina. Ninety percent of the buildings in the worst hit area are gone according to Gov. Haley Barbour. Yet the loss of life has been lower in Mississippi and the recovery effort has been more effective.

While geography may have something to do with the difference, leasdership is probably a bigger factor. When I went through Marine Corps OCS one part of the leadership training was to test how we reacted under stress. It was interesting to see how some people who had exhibited leadership in the civilian world folded under stress. I remember one guy who had been president of the student body at a state university who sounded a lot like some of the Lousiana politicians the last few days. Whining and not taking responsibility are not attributes of great leaders. Engaging in name calling and insults against someone who is trying to help you is not endearing or effective. If these guys can't recapture their composure and get their act together soon, the President should declare marshall law in the effected areas of Louisana and appoint someone to take charge not only of the federal effort in the recovery, but the state and local efforts also. From the governor down to the Mayor of New Orleans, none would have made it through OCS and been trusted with a platoon of Marines. My suggestion for administraitor would be Bobby Jindal and John Breaux. There has to be someone one in that state that can act like an adult and take responsibility for events in their jurisdiction.
