Austin American Statesman:
Displaced Gulf Coast students, and the colleges and universities sheltering them, could receive $227 million in relief from the federal government under a proposal announced by the Bush administration on Friday.
The number of hurricane-displaced students who have enrolled at colleges and universities in Texas exceeds 5,300, nearly double the number reported earlier in the week, state higher education officials said Friday.
The actual number could be close to 6,000 because not all schools have reported to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
The Bush administration has proposed a $1,000 payment for each displaced student. The University of Houston, with 1,600 such students, more than any other school in the state, would receive $1.6 million if Congress approves the plan.
