The media's misunderstanding of triage

I have seen several reports where people in the media complain that there are still bodies laying in the open in New Orleans. Let me give them a clue as to why that is so.

The limited resources available are focused on the living. The priority is to save the living then deal with the dead. In the 1900 hurricaine that hit Galveston it took weeks to bury all the dead and they did not have to deal with getting thousands out of a flooded area.

The principles of triage are that you evaluate people that can be saved and set about to do so. You take care of the clean up later.

Frantic newsies need to get a grip.
