Freeways finally clear around Houston

Houston Chronicle:

Freeways clogged for two days by evacuees from Hurricane Rita had cleared out by this afternoon, and emergency officials encouraged residents to seek shelter and stay there.

"People need to be hunkered down," said Frank Gutierrez, coordinator for the Harris County Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Gutierrez said people who have evacuated should wait until they get the official word that is safe to make their way back to the Houston-Galveston area.
