Democrat activist out of the mainstream when it comes to judges

NY Times:
While many Democratic senators are still wrestling with their vote on Judge John G. Roberts Jr.'s nomination as chief justice of the United States, Democratic activists - in advocacy groups, policy organizations, the party apparatus - do not seem nearly as torn. The Democrats have continued to lose power in the Senate by following their activist positions of judicial confirmations. Most of the senate seats they have lost in the last four years can be directly tied to their obstruction on judicial nominations. If they are going crazy over Roberts it shows that the kooks have taken over. The opposition to the Roberts nomination in Democratic circles is vocal, widespread and not confined to the party's left; Bruce Reed, the president of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council, urged a no vote this week, even as Howard Dean, the Democratic chairman, declared Judge Roberts "the wrong man for the job."
