Al Qaeda's multi front war
As US and Iraqi forces have made it more difficult for al Qaeda to operate in Iraq, the enemy has ramped up it focus on Afghanistan with pre election attempts to frustrate things. Al Qaeda is actually doing worse in Afghanistan than it has been doing in Iraq. Several times its forces have been caught in the open by US and Afghan forces and al Qaeda has suffered substantial casualties. It did get lucky when a SEAL team got surrounded and called for help, but that is not a militarily significant event.
Al Qaeda is now in the position of having to split its meager forces to prevent people from voting. Neither is a campaign likely to win hearts and minds, so al Qaeda tries to intimidate and coerce cooperation with its death cult attitudes. The coercion is not working and is having the effect of driving more people over to the US side. This is particularly true in Iraq, where attempts to control communities quickly turn into a bloody reign of terror.
The death cult has further disbursed its attacks on non combatants in the UK and elsewhere in a vain attempt to frighten people into surrendering in the face of victory. If the anti war left was in charge this might work, but against determined opposition it just points out al Qaeda's weakness. For terror to be an effective weapon an adversary must be able to sustain attacks. Al Qaeda has never really had that capacity outside of prewar Afghanistan. While it is trying to shorten its lead time, each attack still takes months to set in motion.
The oranization has no capacity to take and hold anything. All of its propaganda speeches must be videoed and slipped to news organizations through anonomous couriers because its leaders fear being killed or captured if they make a public appearance. They are like a bully who thinkds he can intimidate people int ogiving them their way with threats of more punishment of the children do not obey their silly commands.
To intimidate, they need a force big and strong enough to impose their will. They do not have a force strong enough to secure a public appearance.
While their diffused forces can act like cockroaches and make a mess here and there they cannot impose bin Laden's will on anyone other than the antiwar left who are desperate to lose to him. Both mistake shrillness and insults for logic. The diffusion of forces is a sign of weakness, not strength. Every time al Qaeda has massed its forces in Iraq or Afghanistan they have suffered significant casualties. The dispersal is a vain attempt to spread the effort against them. However, the primary result has been to add more enemies.
